Part 2- Color investigations-Making Orange and Green and more!

Making the color ORANGE!

 Last week we learned how to mix red and blue to make the color purple, and this week we learned about primary and secondary colors.  This week we learned how to mix yellow and red to make orange and yellow and blue to make green. 

To make the color orange we started with white icing. 

We added red food coloring to one and yellow in the other.

We watched this video of a young girl sharing how she mixes paint to get the color orange.

Although some of our icing was pink, they found that since pink is a shade of red they were able to make a shade of orange. 

EXPLORATION JOURNALS

Documentation is a vital part of our world.  As we explore our world we will be documenting in our Exploration Journals.  Exploration Journals are a place where we will document experiments, things we have explored, discovered and much more.  This week we made to journal entries to document how to make the color purple and orange.  Below you will find a picture of Tyler making his first documentation of how to make the color orange.  He was in the beginning stage but the students showed there were two colors of yogurt, and labeled the colors.  

MAKING GREEN

First read the book "Little Blue, Little Yellow" by Leo Lionni. In this story the two colors blue and yellow hug and turn green. Ask your child what happened to them once they turned green.

For the nice warm afternoon we thought a glass of lemonade would be perfect! The students helped mix the lemonade but our problem was that it wasn't very cold and needed some ice!

We thought it would be fun to make blue ice cubes and let the kids watch it melt away in their lemonade. WOW were they thrilled to see blue ice cubes!

 

 Each child got a glass of lemonade and one blue ice cube.

 On the count of 3 they dropped in their blue ice cube...

1----2----3  DROP!

 ...and watched as their lemonade transformed into a new color. 

 

 

 They didn't have yellow lemonade anymore.  

Their lemonade was 

GREEN!!!

Next week we are going to complete our color investigations.  As we finished drinking our green lemonade I showed the students two short videos on mixing and making new colors.  Take a look at these videos.

The students were amazed by this video and wanted to know how they made this video out of clay without being able to see their hands.  It's a hard concept for them understand so maybe sometime down the road we can investigate how claymation is done.

We paused the video half way through to talk about our experiments and how we used primary colors to make secondary colors.  They were so excited that they said they would like to make a color wheel for our classroom.  I have gone ahead and added it to our agenda for this coming week!
