Tuken Orchard Farm Market

Friday we visited Tuken's Orchard Farm Market.  This is the first year my classroom visited Tukens Farm and Orchard and I'm so happy we did.  It was an awesome field trip and there were plenty of things for the students to observe and discover.  The first thing the students were excited about was having Mrs. Garrabrant and I ride the bus with them.  One student even asked if I was driving the bus!  Here are a few photos of the bus ride there!

The students were instantly attracted to the pumpkins, squash, and gourds.  They were all different colors, shapes, sizes and textures.  The students were comparing them to letters, numbers, pictures, objects and much more!

The hayrides were full, but we learned a lot and got to see Tuken's beautiful farm.  We saw the dog Tuken that the farm is named after, the strawberry patch, pumpkin patch, the pond and we learned a lot of history about the farm.

Some of the students just enjoyed running around in the wide open spaces!

The farm even had their own bee hives!

The pumpkin patch was amazing.  The students actually got to go into the patch and pick their very own pumpkin.  We soon found out that we needed to be careful because the vine and stem were still very prickly.  We had to be very careful picking one so we didn't get splinters in our hands.

We also enjoyed the petting zoo.  Tuken's receive farm animals from owners that can no longer keep them.  All the animals were very tame and the children loved feeding them carrots, corn, straw and feed.

Lunch was also an exciting part of our day.
The animals were jealous that we all got to eat some great food!

Here are some beautiful pictures of what the farm has to offer it's guests.

We found out that the pond at Tukens has a lot of fish and turtles.  This past summer, the farmers had a turtle catcher come out to see what was in the pond.  He was surprised to find a 50 lb. snapping turtle.  We stayed away from the edge but observed the reflections in the water, the cat tails and the insects!

All of our friends enjoyed climbing and playing on the hay bales.  They were far from the ground so many of them had to be strategic in how they planned on making it to the top.  Take a look at Anthony's face when he finally made it!

With a few friends missing, we did happen to snap a class picture!  We had a great time, and I hope all the families had a fun as well.

When we arrived back to the school, we didn't have much time but we did talk about our favorite parts.  We created a graphic organizer web while jotting down our favorite things.  The students then  drew, labeled and wrote in their exploration journals.

Here are some of the students favorite parts.

I hope you have all had a spectacular weekend.  I'm so happy we found Tuken's Farm to be a great trip!  I hope you can visit their farm sometime in the future.  We look forward to this coming weeks discoveries and investigations.  Take care and have a great week!
